Attention, not memorization, is the durable skill

In a world run by AI, the ability to memorize becomes meaningless; the ability to pay attention stays valuable forever.

Memorization is about to become a worthless skill. When AI can recall every fact instantly, the ability to hold information in your head stops being a differentiator — it never really was the source of insight anyway. Newton didn't discover gravity by remembering more than everyone else; he discovered it by paying attention to something everyone else had walked past a thousand times1. That's the actual mechanism of insight, and it has nothing to do with storage capacity.

Attention is also the only faculty that operates in the present tense. Memory is yesterday, imagination is tomorrow, but attention is the one thing you're doing right now, in real time, that actually touches reality2. Everything else is either replaying or projecting.

This matters because attention is also what separates conscious experience from unconscious drift. The line between the two isn't some deep neurological mystery — it's just where you point your focus. Direct it somewhere, and what used to pass by unnoticed suddenly enters your experience3. Nothing about the world changed; your attention did.

How to actually direct it

The common mistake is treating focus as subtraction — trying to force distracting thoughts out of your head. That backfires, because minds don't do subtraction well; they only add. Trying to eliminate a thought amplifies it4.

The fix is to add instead: broaden attention by taking in more detail about the task itself — more context, more of the environment, more of the texture of what's actually in front of you4. You can glance at a garden, or you can look at every leaf. Looking at every leaf is what focus actually feels like from the inside.

So the skill worth building isn't a bigger memory — AI already outclasses you there. It's the capacity to notice, to add detail, to stay in the present long enough for something real to surface. What you notice and choose to dwell on ends up defining the reality you operate in, which is really the same problem from another angle.

The only difference between conscious and unconscious is attention. Focus your attention and what used to pass by unconsciously will all of a sudden appear within your realm of experience.

Next time you struggle to focus on something, don’t try to eliminate distractive thoughts. Our minds only know addition, so trying to remove something is actually amplifying that thought. Instead broaden your focus by paying more attention to detail of the task at hand.
